South of Medina the incense caravans took several different routs. Some traveled through the rugged mountains, while others kept closer to the desert to avoid inhabited places where thieves or taxes were a threat. At various places along the Incense Route, small buildings were erected for the caravan drivers to sleep in. Buildings like this dot the entire route from north to south, as well as other routes across the desert to the east and west.
