This mosque faces 187 degrees, which is closer to Petra than an Between position. When one considers the north (rear) wall of the mosque, it faces even closer to Petra.
According to local lore, Caliph Omar built a smaller Rashidun mosque on this spot during his reign between 634-644 CE or 13-23 AH. The only thing surviving from this mosque is the minaret. The original mosque was later torn down and a large congregational mosque was built on the same spot sometime between 81-183 AH.
This mosque did not have a mihrab, which may indicate than it was built preceding the introduction of the mihrab in 89 AH.
This mosque was badly damaged during the civil war in Syria 2021.
