Above: A proposed new development of the Damascus station

Above: Inside the present station

According to a recent report by a Nabatataea.net reader, the old train station in Damascus is no longer in operation. They reported that when tehy visited the station (October 10, 2004) that the tracks had all been removed, and that the locals said that they were not going to be replaced. The photograph on the right was taken from the train station, and the photo below shows the area where the tracks have been removed from. This will have been done in order to make way for the new staion.

Special thanks to Pim van Rije for these photos.

Mark Smith, The Man in Seat Sixty-One... recenlty wrote us: "There was a short article & artist's impression of the new rail terminal in the International Railway Gazette. The impressive new terminal being built on the site of the old Hedjaz station will have both narrow gauge Hedjaz and standard gauge tracks on two levels plus retail space. It seems the standard gauge tracks from Aleppo which currently terminate at the rather inconvenient Damascus Kadem station (where
I almost failed to get out of my sleeper from Aleppo 'cos I thought it was the Syrian quivalent of the pre-terminus Clapham Junction rather than the actual 'Waterloo' at the end of the line...) right into the centre of Town.

"The details of train service improvements are sketchier - I presume Aleppo trains will soon end up at the new station but I'm not sure whether the key aim is better intercity trains Damascus - Homs- Hama-Aleppo or some sort of new suburban rail network." Mark
