The Dier was originally a tomb, but later became a monastery when Christian monks lived in nearby caves during the Middle Ages. The Dier was very large. The small white blob in the doorway is actually a man leading against the doorpost!

 Nabataean camel caravans brought incense from southern Arabia to the Greek and Roman Empires. Half way along the journey, the Nabataeans started a secret hiding place where they could store their supplies in a crack in a mountain. This hiding place later developed into a small town, that eventually became their capital city, Petra.
