The Roman city of Gadara
Gadara was a Roman town in the north of Jordan. It had a university from which Meleager, the great poet came. Today two theaters survive, plus several temples and piles of stones. The town has been reduced to rubble, probably from some past earthquake. Gadara is notable because of the use of black basalt stone. From Gadara one has a magnificent view of the sea of Galilee to the north and the Jordan Valley to the south. Today it is known as Um Qais.
