The Southern Desert Trek
South of Medina the insence caravans took several different
routs. Some traveled through the rugged mountains, while others
kept closer to the desert to avoid inhabited places where theives
or taxes were a threat. At various places along the Incense Route,
small buildings were erected for the caravan drivers to sleep
in. Buildings like this dot the entire route from north to south,
as well as other routes across the desert to the east and west.

A Canadian, an American and a Kiwi check out
this caravansary in the desert. The author (right) traveled much
of the Incense Road between 1979 and 2003. |
 |
The interior structure is almost identical to
other structures found through out Nabataea. Stone arches were
built, and then long squared rocks were placed over them and
the spaces filled with more rock. |
 |
Note the use of stone columns with large
flat rocks used to connect the columns together. This building
is in almost perfect condition, despite the many years that it
has stood without maintenance. |
